Collect real eki-stamps
Train stations all around Japan have their own stamps you can collect. Here's how the tradition works.
Eki-stamps (station stamps) are free rubber ink stamps found at almost every train station in Japan. The very first one appeared in 1931 at a station in Fukui, and collecting them took off nationwide in the 1970s, when a famous "Discover Japan" travel campaign encouraged families to explore the country by train.
Where to find them
JR stations usually keep their stamp stand outside the ticket gates, so you don't even need a ticket to grab one. Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway stations usually keep theirs inside the gates, so you'll need to have paid your fare first.
How to collect them
Stamps are free for anyone to use. Just find the stand, press it into your book or a notebook, and it's yours to keep as a souvenir.
Try a real stamp rally 🎉
Train companies run limited-time "stamp rallies," where you visit a handful of stations to collect a themed set of stamps, often for a small prize.
Pokémon Stamp Rally
From July 16 to August 31, 2026, JR East is running a giant Pokémon stamp rally across 36 stations around Tokyo. Pick a 6-station course, a 9-station course, or go for all 36. Each one earns a different prize, plus a bonus medal for stopping at a shinkansen station.
Check JR East's and Tokyo Metro's official sites to see whatever's running when you visit. New rallies pop up all the time!
